Capellá-Cerdá house

Location: Palma de Mallorca
Area: 326 m²
Project: 2003
Completion of work: 2005

This renovation project was for a house situated in a quiet residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city. The creative input and commitment of the clients contributed greatly to the whole design process.

The original layout of the ground floor was completely changed, although the structure of the load bearing walls was retained, to create a light and airy space in the shape of a “U”, with the service core in the centre. This floor contains an art workshop, studio, library and a space for theatre rehearsal, which are all connected to the outdoor garden.

On the first floor of the house the layout of almost all of the rooms has been preserved, as have the original floorings and other elements. In some cases the original structure of the building has been left exposed, to reveal walls made of Mares stone, and the concrete joists with arched beam fill which support the flooring above.
